
Abby Reiken joined the Bet Am Shalom community in July 2011. As Education Director, Abby heads both the K-7 Hebrew School and Dor HaHemshech program for middle and high school students, and is deeply involved in the development and planning of Bet Am Shalom's family education programming.
Abby has a rich and varied background as a Jewish educator and leader. She has spent the last 12 years at Temple Israel Center in White Plains, NY, serving as Family Educator, Youth Director Supervisor, Assistant Educational Director and teacher. During her time at TIC, Abby engaged congregants of all ages and backgrounds in a variety of meaningful and inviting educational programs. She has also been a curriculum writer and teacher for Project Etgar: A Middle School Curriculum for Conservative Supplementary Schools, developing components that are used in over 30 schools throughout the United States.
Abby holds a B.S. from Brandeis University (Psychology, magna cum laude) and a Masters of Education in Curriculum and Instruction from Lesley College and did additional graduate work in education and Judaic Studies at the University of Judaism in Los Angeles. She is certified in Elementary Education. She has received numerous awards, including the Solomon Schechter Gold Award for excellence in family education programming, the Grinspoon Foundation Teaching Award for excellence and commitment to Jewish education, and METNY USCJ awards for excellence in synagogue programming and social action programming.
Abby lives in White Plains with her husband Steve and their three daughters.
