What Makes BAS Hebrew School Special?

  • A feeling of belonging and caring for one another. We begin each Sunday as a community with a morning gathering where we pray, sing, act, share our stories, and celebrate together.  Through our new Chaverim (friends) program each younger grade will be matched with an older grade in order to build community across grades in our school.  Each student will have a chaver/chavera (friend) in another class.  Chaverim will get together for a variety of activities throughout the year.

  • Class sizes are kept small! Every student is given individual attention and helped to stretch and reach his/her potential in the classroom.

  • Our children are decoding, reading, writing, and speaking Hebrew.  Our teachers teach Hebrew using engaging, systematic methods.  We assess our students' Hebrew reading skills throughout the year to ensure that everyone is progressing.  Our teen madrichim (leaders) work with individual students who need extra support or enrichment.  Hebrew is an integral part of all areas of learning.
  • Our wonderful staff! Our teachers are experienced educators, deeply dedicated to our students and passionate about Jewish education. Our teachers attend 24 hours of professional development activities per year, where they learn the latest in pedagogical advancements and work collegially as a staff to enhance the education and programs at the school.
  • Our Inclusion Teacher provides a wide range or supportive services to our students and our Educational Therapist provides individualized remediation services to our students in need.
  • Our children are reading Torah, leading prayers and enjoying Shabbat services with their families. Our services on Saturday mornings are filled with singing, praying, and finding personal meaning in the weekly Torah portion. We even had 28 students reading from the Megillah (Scroll of Esther) last Purim.  Families also join together for grade-specific Friday evening services followed by a communal dinner.  Click here for more information about our Shabbat morning Junior Congregation and its integration with classroom learning.
  • Our students experience Jewish living inside and outside the classroom. Through experiential, multi-sensory teaching methods, students enjoy experiencing Jewish living in school.  Students build connections with each other as they discover the relevance of Torah study, the beauty of our Jewish rituals, our love of Israel, the meaning and joy of our holidays, the impact of our Jewish history on who we are, and what it means to be a mensch. Learning in school enriches Jewish living at home, at synagogue, and in our community, which in turn deepens their Jewish education and identity.
  • The very supportive Bet Am Shalom community. The School Board is the committee that oversees the Hebrew School and youth programming. It is made up of a group of very dedicated, caring congregants who work hard to continually enhance the educational experience for our children.
